Acupuncture is a type of alternative medicine that treats patients by insertion and manipulation of solid, generally thin needles in the body. Since its probable origins in Ancient China, acupuncture has been embedded in the concepts of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Its general theory is based on the premise that bodily functions are regulated by the flow of an energy-like entity called QUI Acupuncture aims to correct imbalances in the flow of qui by stimulation of anatomical locations on or under the skin called acupuncture points, most of which are connected by channels known as meridians.
Acupuncture is a Chinese medicine where fine needles are inserted in the specific acupuncture points. These points are very specific about 352 points located in different parts of our body. The Chinese describe energy flow or qui through 12 meridians corresponding important organs such as liver, gall bladder etc.

Two types one is western and second is traditional called TCM (traditional Chinese meridian). The difference is western acupuncture is evidence based and lots of local points are used. The results are guaranteed where as TCM (traditional Chinese meridian) is based on pulse and tongue diagnosis, they also use lots of Chinese herbs.
Advantage of acupuncture is that it promotes general health, relieves pain, treats infertility, and treats and prevents disease.
There is general agreement that acupuncture is safe when administered by well-trained practitioners using sterile needles. Acupuncture almost works in most of the common pain conditions like knee pain, back pain, shoulder pain etc.
Acupuncture can also be used for insomnia, depression and other psychological problems.

Though the points are same for both the technique they are entirely different. Acupressure is probably Indian variant of acupuncture (Varma kalai) in siddha and Ayurveda. There is no needle insertion in acupressure and how much pressure one should use is also controversial. By and large acupuncture is superior scientifically validated practiced all over the western world
They need about 10 sessions, first week everyday then prolong the gap between the sessions. They feel the difference between 4 and 6 sessions. Each session is about 20 minutes.
By and large the relief is permanent though ideally all of them will benefit a top up session once in ten days.
In experienced hands no side effects however in the inexperienced hands infection, trauma can happen.
Local infection, bleeding disorders, patients who are all on warfarin, advanced liver disease needs to be very careful before having acupuncture. Aspirin, clopidogrel and other blood thinning medications are not contra indicated and those patients can safely have acupuncture.
Yes, since there is no internal administration of chemicals it can be tried in addition to any other system of medicine.
